Of late, we have had far too many food product recalls for my appetite.  How is it there are more government employees today than Carter had Little Liver Pills and yet inspectors cannot find a problem until ten or more people die?  Could it be that the agricultural inspectors are playing golf rather than auditing health standards among our food producers?  Could it possibly be that we have lazy government employees doing just enough work to continue collecting pay checks?  NAH!

Eggs, deli meats, pork products, beef products, poultry products, canned vegetables, fresh vegetables, lettuce, fresh fruits, it doesn’t seem to matter.  They all get to the grocer and are sold in mass quantities before a problem is discovered.  Then the recalls begin.

The latest that I’ve heard about is the recall of deli meats from Zemco Industries out of Buffalo, N.Y. but that should not necessarily give Zemco a bad reputation.  It could have been any company, in any location.  The standards are not dissimilar.  The health inspections are the same for anyone in the industry.  Some of the Zemco products purchased from retailers were noted to be tainted with listeriosis.

The list of potential symptoms reads like the MSDS in your recent pharmaceutical purchase.  Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.  “Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy,” the USDA said.  Check with your doctor to be sure this product is right for you.

Last week, and continuing is the recall of eggs.  Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal cramps, nausea, chills, headache, muscle pains and blood in the stool.  It sounds like a Pfizer TV commercial promoting a popular synthetic remedy for a non-existent ailment.

Below is a partial list of recalls for the one week of the current month alone.  This list was taken directly from the FDA website.  I have to question how all these ingestibles made it into consumers’ hands.  You don’t recall something that never left the plant!  I will grant that some of the recalls are duplicates for products with a single origination point.

The FDA has a budget in excess of $5 billion for the current year and is requesting a 14.4% increase for FY 2011.  Could it possibly be that too much of that budget is going to salaries for idle employees and not enough into actual inspection of farms, packing plants, distributors and canners?  Is the FDA collecting their fees (not taxes, mind you) for inspection certificates and then never again or too infrequently inspecting the facilities?

One Response to “RECALL THIS!”

This is an awesome post. I love the litany of evidence and the implication that federal bureaucracy is not only wasteful, it is also a failure. Spend more and get less – what a deal!!
