REDEFINING TRANSPARENCY

During a presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised to run the most transparent White House in history—disclosing donations, shunning lobbyists, and broadcasting important meetings on C-SPAN.  In his inaugural address, he expanded the definition of transparency as quoted below.

“Government should be transparent.  Transparency promotes accountability and provides information for citizens about what their Government is doing.  Information maintained by the Federal Government is a national asset. My Administration will take appropriate action, consistent with law and policy, to disclose information rapidly in forms that the public can readily find and use. Executive departments and agencies should harness new technologies to put information about their operations and decisions online and readily available to the public. Executive departments and agencies should also solicit public feedback to identify information of greatest use to the public.”

By dictionary definition

Transparent – adjective:

     1.   easily seen through, recognized, or detected

     2.   manifest; obvious

Transparency – noun:

     1.  the quality or state of being transparent.

We know that definitions change over the years as usage is abused or misuse becomes common.  When that occurs, customarily, dictionaries add new colloquial or “street” definitions to their entries.  I believe it is time to modify the dictionary definitions, since the President of the United States has redefined them, to include the following.

Transparent – verb:

1.   to lie, obfuscate, confuse, cloud, or muddle

  1.  purposefully and intentionally misdirect, misguide, mislead
  2.  to be secretive, opaque
  3.  tacitly stall

Perhaps I should contact Encyclopedia Britannica, the current owners of Merriam-Webster, Inc. to suggest our president’s new definition.
